Surface: Peru is located in the central-western portion of South America, occupying a total area of 1,285,215 sq. km. and 200 miles of territorial sea.

Population: Estimated at some 28.22 million inhabitants, making it the 4th most populous country of South America. 75% of the population lives in urban areas and 25%, in rural areas. Peru has a mixture of races as a result of the different immigrant groups that have arrived to the country throughout its history.

The whole electric system of Peru is of 220 volts and 60 cycles. Some hotels of 5 and 4 stars have additionally electric systems of 110 volts.

Language:
Peru is a multilingual nation. Its official languages are Spanish and in the zones where they are predominant, Quechua, Aymara and other aboriginal languages.

Religion: The most important religion is Catholicism, which coexists in harmony with other religions that are accepted within the freedom of religion that is established in the Constitution.

Currency: The “nuevo sol” is the currency of Peru. It is subdivided into 100 cents.

Economy:
Thanks to the wealth of its natural resources and high levels of exports make mining, agriculture and fishing the main sources of the country’s foreign exchange. In recent years, however, products with value-added have gained greater importance among our exports, as has the service sector, thus permitting our economy to develop and enabling us to become the fastest growing country in the entire region. Tourism is also an important generator of employment and income for the country. Among the major destinations are Machu Picchu and other archaeological sites in the city of Cuzco, Lake Titicaca, the Nazca Lines and the Amazon jungle.

Banking & Shopping hours:

Street shops and Stores are mostly open from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm.
Shopping centers and malls are open from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm; however some companies now stay open 24 hours a day.
Banks are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm with no lunch breaks. Some banks open Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Geography: Peru is divided into 3 distinct regions:
The coast, a narrow desert strip that, at its widest point, is 180 km. wide. Here we find destinations such as the Nazca Lines and Paracas.
The sierra, with the Andes Mountains crisscrossing the territory and making a geography as diverse as the plains surrounding Lake Titicaca and the heights of Machu Picchu.
The jungle, dominated by the exuberance of the Amazon.

Food & Beverage:
Peru boasts one of the finest cuisines in Latin America. Recipes such as ceviche (raw fish marinated in lemon juice), pachamanca (meat and vegetables cooked underground), chupe de camarones (shrimp soup), ají de gallina (spicy chicken) and juane (cornmash pastries) are just a few of the mouth-watering dishes served up in Peru.
In the Andes, meanwhile, delicious ingredients such as the potato and sweetcorn in all its varieties, plus cuy (guinea pig) and ají chili pepper are the basis of highland cooking and are to be found across the country.
The jungle adds its own touch, wild gamewith a side serving of fried banana and manioc root. Local fruit varieties such as chirimoya (custard apple) and lucuma produce incomparable deserts.
Over the course of centuries, Peru has felt the influence of Spain in stews and soups, Arab sweets and desserts, African contributions to Creole cooking, Italian pastas, Japanese preparations of fish and shellfish and Chinese culinary methods which have given birth to one of the most popular gastronomic traditions in Peru: chifa. But the originality of Peru's cuisine does not stem just from its traditional cooking -rather, it continues to incorporate new influences, preparing exquisite and impeccable dishes that have been dubbed the New Peruvian Cuisine. It is a veritable privilege to experience Peru's cooking.

Vaccinations:
Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for areas east of the Andes mountains. Not needed for Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu.
Malaria vaccionation is recommended if travelling to the Amazon basin
